The Magic of Christmas in Leavenworth

Christmas lights in Leavenworth, WashingtonI’m like a little kid when it comes to Christmas lights and celebrations. There is something magical about this time of year with the special treats, traditions, music, decorations, and of course, the lights.

Leavenworth, Washington is one of the places in the Pacific Northwest known for celebrating the holidays in a big way. Country Living Magazine gave it the number one spot on its list of America’s Best Small Towns for Christmas. After visiting with my daughter, I can see why.

Christmas in Leavenworth, WA

I wrote about this great Christmas town for a post on Parenthood & Passports about the Best Christmas Destinations Around the World so you can read more about Leavenworth’s month long celebration over there. You might also find a few more destinations you’ll want to visit next Christmas! (I’m definitely tempted by the posts on Toronto, Canada, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Cologne, Germany 🙂 )

If you decide to visit Leavenworth in December, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Christmas tree lights in Leavenworth, Washington
    • A two-lane highway is the only way to get in or out of Leavenworth. Go early to avoid traffic.
    • If you don’t want to drive, several bus companies shuttle groups into town for the events.
    • Better yet, just spend the night! But make your reservations early. Hotels and Airbnb get booked months in advance.
    • Dress warmly. This part of Washington gets plenty of snow so it can be really cold.
    • Most events are free, but you’ll want to have cash in hand for street vendors and craft fairs. Many are run by local groups raising money for their church, school or nonprofit organization.

Leavenworth looks like such a festive little town! Great tip on taking the shuttles into town and booking a hotel early. I’d love to add this to my list of places to visit in 2018 or 2019.

We were just in Leavenworth this past July. I have to agree that it is such a cute little town! Loved all of the German food and architecture!

I have heard a lot about this town! I know it would be lovely to visit during the holidays. Staying in town sounds like a fantastic idea. I am all about beating the crowds so I think that is a good way to avoid a little bit of that. #FlyAwayFriday

I love travelling at Christmas! Your pictures make me wish I went to a big Christmas market this year like I went to Frankfurt last year. Great photos, thanks for this!

We are lovers of Christmas lights too. There are some amazing light setup in Vancouver Canada. Have you seen them? if not you should head up next year to see them.

Truth be know I have never heard of Leavensworth until know. We always get caught in Seattle and never make it into the mountains. Maybe one day we will do an trip into the cascades. We have a good excuse after reading this.

Thanks for sharing. Keep traveling blogging. Adventure is better when shared with friends!

I love Vancouver. Driving across that bridge into the city always takes my breath away. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be at Christmas. I’ll definitely look into it for future travel!!

Awww this makes me so sad! Reading tips like dress warm and looking at beautiful wintery Christmas images just doesn’t feel right when I’m wearing shorts and T-shirt in the South American heat! It really does look magical here, the kinda place that guarantees a great Christmas!

My husband and I go trail running out there in the summer all the time – we love it! Haven’t been during the winter in years, but as we’re based in Seattle, we might have to change that soon!

I love Christmas lights, too! However, in Asia where I currently live, it is often on the brink to “overdecorated”. How did you feel about Leavenworth? Classy and festive all over town or also a little bit too much in places?

    • Sherrie 20 December 2017 at 8:42 am

I know what you mean, but Leavenworth wasn’t overdone, at least not for me. It felt very classic, very festive.
